| Spelling |
Each week we will have 10 Spelling words that will be on a test on Friday morning. We also have 2 word wall words on Friday's test. You can click here for a list of all the first grade Spelling words for the year. Students need to be able to spell the words correctly and print them using the correct size letters. They also need to be able to read each of these words. |
| Reading |
We are using the Scott Foresman reading series again this year. Some of the stories are fiction and some are non-fiction. We will have a different story each week. We also have a set of leveled readers to accompany each story. We have a different set of readers and stories that we send home occasionally for homework. We will also be reading big books during our reading time. The class reads along with the teacher and does activities to develop comprehension skills. Each week we will add new sight words to our word wall. The kids are expected to be able to read these words and remember them. They should know them well so they do not have to take time to sound them out. You can find a link to our sight words (High frequency words) by clicking on the following link. We will also be doing the Michael Heggerty Phonics program each morning. This is a phonemic awareness program that has skills that we practice orally each morning. Its a fun, active way to get the kids to review their phonics skills. |
| Math | We start each day with a calendar meeting. We put up the date, day of the week and weather each day. We talk about the days of the week and months of the year. We work on patterns, figure out mystery numbers and do many other activities throughout the year. Later in the day we do a math lesson with lots of hands-on activities followed by a worksheet. We do the front of each Math paper together to learn the skills and the back of the paper is done individually. Sometimes Side B is sent home for homework. It should be done and checked over by an adult and returned the next day. |
| English | For the first quarter we will be doing Star Student interviews and creating a book about the students in our class. Each day the students will interview a "star" and the teacher will model writing on large chart paper. The students will then write one or two sentences about that child and illustrate. These will be made into a book that the star student takes home. They will be using "brave" spelling when writing. This means they are to sound out words that they do not know how to spell. As long as we can read the words phonetically they are doing it right. If the word has been a spelling or word wall word, we expect them to spell the word correctly. |
| Science | In Sept. we will be doing a unit on insects, especially butterflies. We will learn about the parts of an insect. We will have monarch caterpillars and watch them throughout their life cycles. It's very exciting to watch them form their chrysalis and then emerge as a beautiful butterfly. |
| Social Studies |
We will be reading about many interesting things in our
Scholastic Newspaper each week. We will also be reading biographies about
famous people in our Social Studies series. Part of our units are in
big books that we will read together and some of them are stories in our
easy to read biography books. We will also work on map skills
throughout the year.
