Mrs. Hofelich's Room

Our class has 18 students this year,  11 boys and 7 girls. Our room is located in the Junior High Wing, first room on the left.  Marlene Hofelich is the teacher for  English, spelling, math, social studies, art, and health.  Mrs. Strake teaches the science and the reading.  Mr. Jason Long is the band and music director, and Mr. Derek Bardill teaches all P.E. classes.

      Math

Math is a challenge for the students.  Students work on the board, in groups and individually using their notebooks or wipe off boards to work through daily problems. We usually cover a lesson a day with quizzes to test understanding throughout the chapters.  We are starting Chapter 4 learning about division.  Please continue to review multiplication math facts with the students.

             Weatherman for the Morning Broadcast

Each day a "weather team" will prepare a weather report for the morning broadcast in the Media Production Studio.  The team gathers the morning temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, front/air mass movement, and forecast for the next day. The best place to gather this information is from the Ch 5 weather report.  The meteorologists repeat the weather about every 10 minutes or so.  The weather team consists of two students who will take care of the weather report for a week. We trade off between the classes each week.

      Social Studies

We're studying colonial times with the Europeans settling in America.  The class covered settlements on Roanoke, Jamestown, Plymouth, and others.  Along with the religious groups, we will cover the Salem Witch trials involving the Puritans in the 1600's.

                 English

Each day English class starts with two D.O.L. sentences  that we "fix" on the SmartBoard.  The rest of the class interjects where necessary.  The class works through a binder of writing exercises and quizzes during the main part of class.  Their work is usually shared orally with the class.  The exercises will prepare the students to become proficient writers and do well on the state tests in the spring.  We are working on Expository writing right now.

         Spelling

This year the students have a new spelling book that is tied to their new reading series.  Click here to see the spelling lists.

EXTRA CREDIT  is offered in most subjects except Spelling to be due the last two weeks of the quarter. Information sheets were passed out along with Math packets.  My policy is if you do a good job on extra credit you can earn 2 points on your average.  Students either do it or not.  It's not the more you do, the more you get.

We take part in an overnight trip to the St. Louis Zoo, as part of  a program called "Wild Night at the Zoo".  It has been scheduled for Wednesday, April 8, 2009.  Students will earn money for the trip by participating in a Readathon in January.  Each student will be permitted to take along one parent.  In December students should be collecting pledges for the Readathon.
