Student Online Personal Protection Act (Soppa)

Effective July 1, 2021, school districts are required by the Student Online Personal Protection Act (SOPPA) to provide additional guarantees that student data is protected when collected by educational technology companies and that the data is used for beneficial purposes only.

Aviston Elementary School District #21 is a member of the Illinois Student Privacy Alliance.  The ISPA is a free consortium that allows school districts to access management tools and resources for data privacy agreements. All Illinois school districts are invited to join ISPA. When used in conjunction with clear policies and procedures, ISPA allows districts to comply with Illinois’ new Student Online Personal Protection Act (SOPPA).

Through the alliance, Aviston District #21 is able to enter into agreements with vendors through a process where an originating agreement from a member school district can be applied to or “piggy backed” any other member district.  The original agreement will reflect information from the district of origin, with Exhibit E showing approval by Aviston SD #21.
